茶馆 Teahouse
The drama by Lao She, Teahouse includes three scenes, respectively showing life of the old China for three stages of the end of the Qing Dynasty, the beginning of the Republic of China and the period before the Kuomintang regime ended in the mainland China. All the stories in Teahouse happened in a tea-house. People coming and going, the tea-house gathered persons of all kinds from all walks of life. A big tea-house was exactly a small society. Lao She held onto characteristics of this scene, condensed sixty to seventy roles spanning half a century into a tea-house, showed views of life in three stages of the awake of the Reform Movement of 1898 in the end of the Qing Dynasty, the separatist regimes by the Northern Warlords at the begging of the Republic of China, and the period before the overthrown of the Kuomintang regime. The book sums up the sharp confrontation and conflicts between each social class and several forces in China and implies the historical fate of a semi-feudal and semi-colonized old China.
