To what extent has the Jakarta’s government’s strategies to control traffic problems been successful?
In 2014, Jakarta was predicted to experience gridlock if there are no effective
measures taken to reduce acute traffic congestion since 2000 where Jakarta was
diagnosed with severe traffic. Numerous attempts have been implemented to
alleviate traffic such as decentralization strategy, development of housing
residences, development of toll roads, BRT system, traffic curbing, renewed BRT
system and integrated transport system. These measures can be divided into 4
phases.
However, these past attempts weren’t effective as there was only a minimal
reduction in traffic. Because of this President Jokowi launched the proposed
MRT system, which was considered as phase 4 in October 10th 2013 that aims to
mitigate traffic in Jakarta This led to question. “To what extent have the Jakarta
government’s strategies to control traffic problems been successful?”
Since previous attempts have not been successful, the construction of the MRT’
project looks assuring. This is because in order for Jakarta to overcome the
traffic gridlock completely, it requires a large integrated transportation system
that incorporates all aspect of transport modes into one system.
