Will Hexagonal Closed-Packing (HCP) or Cubic Closed Packing (CCP) produce a higher packing density for identical spheres in a cylindrical container, and what kind of arrangement will produce the highest packing density overall, given the circumstances?
The research question of this essay is:
“Will Hexagonal Closed-Packing (HCP) or Cubic Closed-Packing (CCP) produce a higher packing density for identical spheres in a cylindrical container, and what kind of arrangement will produce the highest packing density overall, given the circumstances?”
After noticing the unique stacking pattern of some medicine pills I was taking, I decided to investigate the subject of sphere packing. Two types of packing systems – the Hexagonal-Closed and the Cubic-Closed Packing systems – were considered in this investigation in order to compute the packing densities of several possible cases, compare the two systems, and find which system produces a denser packing arrangement, as suggested by the Kepler Conjecture. The total volume of the spheres is kept constant at 8575 16
