This research was based on a personal experience that was brought up due to my own concern. This research focuses on the problems faced by typical Indonesian citizens when using their transportation. There are quite a number of bad condition roads in Jakarta and I myself realized that it could lead to bigger problems.
The research question that thus guides this research is “How does the roughness of a surface affect the speed of a moving object?”
To reach this goal I have made an experimental set up that will be suitable for this investigation. I set up a track with a toy car suspend in mid air with two retort stand. To allow the car to move from one end of the track to the other end, I tied the toy car to a certain load with a string. I used a stopwatch as the preliminary experiment and then used a photogate to make readings more accurate. I did more modification to my experimental set up to reach my final experiment set up. To find out the roughness, I made a square shaped (3 by 3) block out of paper and using a micrometer screw gauge to measure the thickness.
With the investigation and experimental set up I created, I concluded that there is a directly proportional relationship between the variables and time taken. The increase of variables in my investigation results the increase of time taken for the toy car to go trough the track. But the number of bumps or roughness did not increase as significant as the change of height of the bumps or roughness.
