The story of a young boy, Dan, sent to his uncle and aunt's farm to convalesce after having his appendix out. Through his friendship with old Ben Uggett he regains his health and becomes more self-assured. A ferret also becomes Dan's friend and Ben teaches him how to train and look after it.
